Day 12: Screenshot your desktop.

I've uploaded the photos I'm using as my wallpaper instead of taking a screenshot of my desktop since there really isn't anything on there except the header on top of the screen. I'm using a MacBook Pro, so my dashboard is hidden unless I hover my cursor over the bottom of my screen. It also means I have multiple screens to work with, hence the two photos. Both are taken in Vancouver, Canada. The first was when we were on a day tour of Victoria Island and the second is a sunset view from the hostel room I was living in for a month :) I'm kind of missing the place right now.

#49 Whistler Brewing Company
Thursday, 20 June 2013

What would a Singaporean do after seeing a sign like this??

Poutine (AGAIN)

Beer Battered Onion Rings - with macho sauce to dip.

Spinach & Artichoke Dip - served with pita bread and nacho chips.

Warehouse Steamed Mussels - a seasonal special of fresh mussels tossed in the Chef's sauce of the week.

Crispy Honey Garlic Chicken Wings.

Maple Bacon Potato Skins - russet potato skins, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, crispy maple bacon, green onion and sour cream.

Union Street Noodle Salad - marinated chicken, chow mein noodles, suey choi, green onion, pea shoots, avocado, toasted sesame, almonds, cucumber with sweet soy ginger dressing.

Braised Beef Spaghetti - fresh herbs, hint of cream and slow cooked braised beef.

Warehouse Crispy Mac N' Cheese - creamy 3 cheese, roasted red pepper alfredo sauce, crunchy corn flake, fresh thyme and parmesan crust.

Smokey BBQ Burger - premium alberta beef, smokey bbq sauce, jalapeños, cheddar, macho sauce, lettuce and tomato on a toasted brioche bun (served with supposedly yam fries that tasted like sweet potatoes).

Mushroom Swiss Burger - premium alberta beef, sautéed mushrooms, gravy, macho sauce, swiss cheese, shredded lettuce and tomato on a toasted brioche bun.

Yam fries (that tasted like sweet potatoes).

Mini Donuts - ten mini donuts, sugar dusting with dark chocolate ancho chili dipping sauce.

Fried Apple Pie - sugared okanagan apples, cinnamon sugar with vanilla ice cream.

ORDER LIKE CRAZY!!!

Food at the Whistler Brewing Company was surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because we were at a tourist attraction. Any restaurant/pub/bar/cafe that sells food at this price at a tourist attraction like Whistler must be not very good. But what do you know, the food was amazing. My favourites include the Union Street Noodle Salad (so good that I ate it 3 days in a row), the Smokey BBQ Burger and the Fried Apple Pie (so delicious but sooooo sinful). Okay, I'm going to end abruptly here cause I had originally intended for this to just be a photo entry :)

XOXO, T.

#48 Skydiving at Whistler
Wednesday, 19 June 2013

Seriously, this is one of the most memorable things I've done in my life. Skydiving - checked off my bucket list ✔ There really isn't any way to best describe the feeling, so I'll attach the video that I had recorded at the end of this blog post. I look fucking ugly and fat inside the video but whatever, at least I have something to remember the experience by. Kind of disappointed that the quality of the video is so poor though, we had to fork out close to CAD$90 extra for the video recording :(
To be honest, it isn't as scary as most people make it out to be. I, for one, am freaking humji already and I wasn't even that nervous when I was up in the sky. I was more cold than anything else; fingers hurt like a mofo after the whole thing. The only scary part is when the instructors swing open the door and you're getting ready to leap off. After that, it's just this feeling of free falling for about 30 seconds before the parachute gets released and you're slowly floating to the ground. Aye, just watch the video at the end of this post and have a good laugh :)

Played around the Pemberton airport area while the rest took turns to skydive. There were 8 of us in total and we flew up in pairs. I went first with Joanna, so we had tons of time to frolic around after we were done (of course, getting ready to take photos for the rest after they jumped out of the plane). They were so many dandelions growing everywhere that I think I went a tad overboard plucking and blowing them. There was also this super adorable, fluffy and friendly golden retriever that I managed to snap a photo with :)

Took a couple of group photos after everything was done - 1 with the instructors, 1 with just the 8 of us and 1 with the Mexican students who are here on exchange with us (surprised that only 4 of them were brave enough to go skydiving). The whole experience was pretty costly though, so if you're ever in Whistler and decide to go for this activity, prepare to burn a hole in your pocket.

XOXO, T.

#47 Stepho's Greek Restaurant (re-visited)

Tarama - The Greek Caviar. CAD$4.75.

Dolmathes - Vine Leaves stuffed with Rice & Ground Beef. CAD$5.45.

Spanakopita - Spinach Cheese Puff. CAD$5.45.

Stepho's Prawns Souvlakia, served with Rice, Pilaf, Roast Potatoes and Greek Salad. CAD$11.45.

Oh god, I'm having E-Business class right now and it is so fucking boring that I swear, if I didn't have my laptop with me, I'd kill myself with multiple paper cuts from the notes issued. Anyway, a few of us re-visited the Greek Restaurant (blogged previously here) yesterday for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it was because the Vancouver Baseball Game that we were supposed to go for was sold out. Seriously, the level of incompetence with regards to the people in charge of us is shocking. I don't mean to sound ungrateful or anything, but they are so useless that I'm speechless. They only checked with us if we were interested in going, on the ACTUAL day itself *genius*
Another reason we went back was because we wanted to try the grilled prawns that some of the rest on exchange with us had recommended. It was REALLY good :D I have a feeling we might visit the place one last before we leave for Seattle next week. Alright, got to go now, the prof is starting to stare.

XOXO, T.

#46 Ciao Bella
Saturday, 15 June 2013

Di Mari - baby shrimp, fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil & button mushroom in white wine sauce.

Salmone - wild B.C. salmon sauteed with garlic, lemon, white wine in tomato cream sauce.

Carbonara - pancetta, egg yolk, garlic, parmesan cheese & cream.

Ciao Bella - mushroom, garlic and parsley with demi-glazed white wine cream sauce.

Heh heh, so the reporting time for the Whistler trip is 30 minutes later than I had anticipated. Managed to squeeze in another quick and short entry before heading down to the pick up point and board the bus. Read somewhere online that it'll get as cold as 6°C when we're there. Both exciting and scary at the same time, ha-ha. Packing loads of warm clothes to make sure I can survive the weather. Anyway, do read the previous entry about the BEST Greek food I've had so far while in Vancouver :)

This entry however, is about an Italian restaurant we chanced upon after our day of cycling over at Stanley Park. It's called Ciao Bella (how cliche) and they have special promotions on different days that you visit the place. We were able to enjoy the 50%-off-pasta promotion :D The food is of really good quality, from the bread to the pasta to the wine. I truly enjoyed myself there even though once again, their portions are enormous. We all had to pack like half of whatever we ordered and heat it up again to have for dinner, ha-ha. Very worth it with the promotion, It's about CAD$9.88 per person without the wine?

Alright, got to head down soon. Going to do some last minute checks and make sure I've got everything I need with me for the weekend. Ciao!

XOXO, T.

#45 Stepho's Greek Restaurant

Hi all! Life so far in Vancouver has been pretty packed, hence the lack of updates. Between wanting to explore the city, cooking for ourselves and summer classes/assignments/projects, I usually just plonk myself onto the bed once I'm back at the apartment and fall asleep. But I managed to find some time right now, between packing my bag and taking a bus up to Whistler for the weekend, to churn out one quick and short entry :D Side Note: WHISTLER!!! I'm so excited, SKY DIVING tomorrow!

Anyway, my apartment mates and I decided to give this place, Stepho's Greek Restaurant, a try after we passed by it the other day while exploring Davie Street (the gay-bourhood of the city). It had an incredibly long queue snaking outside their entrance and being typical Singaporeans, our mentality was "long queue, must be good". So after our mid-terms on Thursday, we headed down pretty early (around 1730H) to try and avoid the long lines. We were fortunate enough to not have to wait in line. Tip: if you're ever in Vancouver and want to visit the place, try to be there before 1800H cause that's roughly when the crowd starts pouring in. Okay, enough said, time for pictures of the food!

Tiroboukes (Cheese Balls) Stepho's Creations. CAD$5.95

Humous - Tahini & Chick Pea Patè served with Pita Bread (not pictured). CAD$4.95

Kalamaria Dinner - Fried Squids served with Rice Pilaf, Roast Potatoes & Greek Salad. CAD$9.95

Mousaka - Ground Beef, Zucchini, Egg Plant, Potatoes and Bechamel served with House Salad. CAD$9.95

Roast Lamb (Tavernas Specialty) - served with Roast Potatoes, Rice Pilaf, Vege Briami & Greek Salad. CAD$10.95

The portions in Canada are so huge it's mind boggling. We just shared everything among the 4 of us and we were STILL unable to finish. I mean seriously, they serve their mains with potatoes AND rice, talk about carbicide. On top of that, we had starters which came with bread (MORE CARBS). My overall verdict for the place is that it's fucking awesome. BEST meal so far since I've been to Canada. Delicious Greek food at reasonable prices, and the staff were friendly too (the tipping system here helps). I'd definitely recommend anyone coming to Vancouver to give this place a shot, at least once.

Okay, signing off with a huge ass picture of me and the Roast Lamb (FUCKING DELICIOUS). I need to watch what I eat if not I'll return to Singapore looking like a tennis ball. Right, now I need to go pack my suitcase for a weekend at Whistler. Have I mentioned how freaking excited I am? Ha-ha.

XOXO, T.
